Former BlackBerry Executive, high technology attorney and candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress for the 36th Congressional District, Chuck Meyer, releases the text of a letter to the Stockman campaign, in which he outlines the reasons for his call to the Stockman campaign to discontinue the use of the term "Re-elect" in the Stockman campaign materials.

Meyer states, "In releasing the text of the letter, I want to demonstrate to the voters of the 36th Congressional District that when I see a problem, I will use my best efforts and the tools at my disposal to address the problem. As the only lawyer in the race and as a former law professor, I view it as my civic duty to research the law in this area, and to point out to the Stockman campaign why I believe the use of the term Re-Elect in its campaign material may be misleading to the voters in the 36th Congressional District. This letter gives the Stockman campaign the opportunity to correct their campaign materials, so that the average voter is not led to believe that a former Congressman who last served as a Representative in 1997 is the incumbent in the race. Although I am not attempting to provide legal advice to any campaign, I do feel it is important to point out the provisions of the Texas Election Code that may be applicable to signage in a Congressional race."

"There is, of course, no incumbent in the 36th," Meyer continues. "The 36th is one of four newly-created districts that Texas received as a result of a substantial population shift to our great state as evidenced by the last census. There is no one to re-elect. All the candidates stand on the same footing; we are all challengers. It is unfortunate that at a time when many voters are already confused as a result of redistricting, the Stockman campaign has chosen to add to the electoral confusion by suggesting that Mr. Stockman is the incumbent in the race."

Chuck will be holding a brief press conference on Friday, May 11th at Noon on the steps of the Jefferson County Court House to report on any response from the Stockman Campaign.
